Intro

 My name is Nicole Hernandez. I'm a student at Fort Lauderdale High, and I'm back, excited to be starting A level Media Studies. I took AS Level Media Studies last year. I really like movies so I'm glad to be continuing a class that studies them. Last year, I created a few projects. This year, I will be doing just the one. I will create a short film in its entirety. I will use the skills I learned last year and continue to research to create my film. I will update my journey throughout several blog. It will work much like it did last year, with research and storyboard updates but the blogs will differ a little more, since there is more to get done in  a five minute film than just an intro to a film like I did last year.

 I don't know what my final exam is going to look like quite yet. I do know I will be graded differently in terms of the project, since there is just the one project to get done. Regardless of whether or not I'm writing an essay for A level, I brushed up on my media studies terms recently. I want to be able to know information for my blogs, because I want to be able to describe my film or my ideas for my film in more detail. I have already started watching short films. Notes have been jotted down, about common themes and angles I noticed. Some of these notes will be transferred to some of my other blogs when I go more in depth with research later on. Before that though, I will make my group and pitch blogs. They should come up right after this log, actually. I can only hope this will be my best project of all my projects, and I'm very excited to start working!

 Here are my film pitches - An alien seeks to make friends on their new planet with the support of their one non-alien friend. They debate going up to a group of strangers to make friends. - A person resents their primary caregiver and wishes for something different, only to subconsciously seek out people just like their caregiver, furthering a cycle. Whether they continue or break the cycle is up to the audience.  -  A person is kind of a pushover, they will end up saying yes, or just complying to most things, never looking out for their own self interest. They learn to be selfish, for the better.  I can't help be the most compelled by the first one, my very first idea. I really like all the others, but I can't imagine them living up to my vision, whereas I think I could accomplish the first idea I pitched. Aliens and even non-aliens could look like anything, so i could do voiceovers, stand-ins for humans, actual humans, etc.

Group

 I have chosen to work alone on our up and coming assignment. I tend to work better without a group. The project is one that involves filming, so that should be fun. We have to storyboard as well. This is when you essentially make a comic of what you plan to film. Each panel is about six seconds of film. The panels themselves don't have to be detailed, just enough to know what is happening. When you film based off of them, you tend to not film in order. This is manly for convenience. If a scene changes locations a lot, you should film all the scenes set in one location in one go. This makes it so the actors wont have to move from place to place. After filming, you'll find you have multiple shots. The job of the editor is to pick the best ones. Often some shots were not storyboarded, and were instead improvised. Editors will have to find their place. Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

Short film:   My first impression is that this short is very ominous, frightening, and a bit sad as well. Lots of dark colors, no dialogue. The plot involves sentient rag dolls labeled by number, the protagonist being 9. What seemed to be his last remaining friend was killed saving him from the antagonist, a robotic cat like beast. None of the characters develop, the plot revolves around 9 defeating the monster and avenging his fallen companions. It was animated relatively well, with the only sound being the characters interacting with their environments. If there was music it was brief and simplistic enough to go unnoticed. It follows the conventions of thriller, with feelings of suspense and a dark background, as well as that of thriller, with a post-apocalyptic setting and non-humans taking center stage.  Full-length film: My first impression of the full length film was that it was not silent.
